Loving our Shoulders & Ankles...

During retreats classes often begin with a variety of simple joint limbering exercises to soften the body and to prepare for deeper postures. Joints need to be lubricated to function well and yoga postures work so well to get into every nook and cranny of the body, keeping the joints well oiled.

One of the most common areas of tightness in people's bodies is the shoulders. If sitting at a computer the shoulders will more often than not be rounding forward rather than rolling back. The chest will be collapsing rather than opening out and the breath will be short, shallow and restricted rather than deep, full and relaxed.

To stay healthy and energised, every now and again, come into the arm stretch as shown in this photo (standing or sitting is fine). The shoulders roll back and open. If you can't join hands use a strap or belt to hold onto. 5 breaths either side will give so many benefits. The shoulder joints will soften and the chest will lift and expand for deeper fuller breathing. Ahh....

Another joint needing a lot of attention these days - what with so much time spent sitting in chairs and driving cars - is our ankles. Squatting down and getting grounded helps keep the ankles flexible and in yoga we do a lot of bending and squatting. At home try some of the postures below and every now and again, instead of sitting on the couch, sit on a cushion on the floor to keep the hips, knees and ankles fluid and mobile.

Here's some postures for looking after your ankles...

If you'd like to read more about this topic Click here to read the article I wrote for Wellbeing Magazine titled: "Get off that chair to regain your flexibility!" with lots of different postures to explore to soften the ankles.

Kids Love Yoga...

Speaking of flexibility, it's always such a joy to share yoga with kids. My daughter Dakota loves mimicking me in the postures, especially on the beach where we do balancing postures then topple into the sand and wash off in sea. Often I'll leave my mat and props in the lounge and she'll start her own playful yoga.

A while back Dakota told me that when she gets bigger she's going to teach me how to do yoga. Another time she told me she's going to help teach the yoga on the retreats. I can't wait!

There's so much happening out there in the way of yoga for kids, there's kids yoga DVD, books and classes and a wide choice of Kids Yoga Teacher Trainings Courses to learn to teach yoga to kids. I imagine when teaching kids the teachers would soon become the students...

Sweet Lime & Tahini Dressing...

One of my favourite dressings is a simple tahini, garlic and lemon or lime mix. I have it on salads or drizzled over steamed vegetables. It's so easy to make, so good for you and delicious. Below is a recipe from a friend Lora, who has an infectious passion for preparing healthy foods that taste great:

2 tablespoons of tahini
Juice of 1 lime
2 tablespoons current water
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon of dried garlic (I use fresh garlic in my dressing)
1/2 teaspoon of cumin

Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl or a blender and toss with shredded salad to serve.

Here's Lora's list of Basic Ingredients she keeps in her kitchen for whipping up tasty dressings and dips, etc:

Raw Honey or Maple Syrup
Crushed Red Chile Pepper Flakes
Organic Olive Oil
Salt, usually Himalayan or Celtic
Limes, Lemons or usually Apple Cider Vinegar
Nama Shoyu
Tahini
