Join Jessie Chapman and facilitators for a yoga and walking retreat in the ancient walled city of Viterbo, in the Tuscia region of central Italy, between Siena and Rome. Steeped in Etruscan history and surrounded by rolling countryside spanning parts of Lazio, Tuscany, and Umbria, the region offers a rich blend of culture, nature, and history. Over seven nights, we stay in a family-owned boutique hotel, a restored palace in the heart of Viterbo, a medieval city reached by an easy two-hour train journey from Rome.

Each day begins with morning yoga and breakfast before we join our local walking guides, who share their deep love of the region, its trails, and its history as we head out into the surrounding countryside. Following trails through rural landscapes and quiet villages, we visit local wineries, wander medieval streets, and explore ancient Etruscan tunnels carved into the stone thousands of years ago, with lunch enjoyed along the way as a picnic or at a local restaurant. Afternoons bring restorative yoga with Jessie and facilitators, followed by an evening meal in-house or at a favourite restaurant in town. This retreat offers personalised guidance and support for all levels of yoga and walking, and everyone is warmly welcomed and cared for throughout.

Yoga, Restoration & Stillness

Each day on our Italy yoga retreat is centred around morning and afternoon yoga, combined with guided walking tours through stunning landscapes and historical towns. All classes are suitable for every level, from complete beginners to seasoned practitioners. Guests receive individual guidance and hands-on adjustments from Jessie and facilitators, with props provided throughout.

Jessie’s morning classes combine gentle flowing sequences with breath awareness and longer held postures to cultivate strength, flexibility, correct alignment, and awareness. Afternoons are restorative yoga, a slower, quieter practice to deeply rest the body, slow the body’s systems, and replenish natural energy levels. As evening falls, yoga nidra and pranayama guide you into stillness, calming the mind and nervous system for deep, restful sleep.

Our Walking Days

Our walking days typically cover between 7 and 12 kilometres, with other days devoted to sightseeing, tastings, and exploring the region alongside our knowledgeable local Italian guides. The landscapes of the Lazio region feature gentle ups and downs, but the terrain is not mountainous or technically challenging. Our routes follow well-worn paths along quiet farming roads, through vineyards, oak and chestnut forests, and along old country lanes. For those who would like a lighter day, there is always the option to ride in the support van, where you can still enjoy the sightseeing, scenery, and our guides’ historical insights and stories about each day’s destination.

Accommodation & Meals

Our boutique retreat accommodation is a restored palace in the heart of Viterbo, where we settle in for the week. Set on the historic Piazza del Gesù, the family-owned hotel blends centuries-old character with modern comforts, including private ensuite rooms, air-conditioning, heating, and complimentary wi-fi. Peaceful garden spaces offer a quiet place to unwind between activities.

Breakfasts are served in-house after yoga, lunches are enjoyed as a picnic or at a local restaurant along the way, and dinners are served either in-house or at a nearby restaurant. All meals served in-house are vegetarian, with dietary requirements catered for with advance notice.

Viterbo has a well-preserved medieval quarter, with cobbled streets and piazzas just steps from our front door. Located south of the Tuscan border, with Umbria to the east, the region has roots reaching back more than 2,500 years to the Etruscans.

Your Italy Yoga Retreat hosts are Jessie Chapman and facilitators, together with our experienced local Italian walking guides. Jessie has been leading Radiance Retreats since 2002, and loves creating space for people to deepen their yoga practice, move well, and feel restored. Jessie and the team bring genuine care and an abundance of local knowledge to each guest’s Italy yoga and walking retreat, meeting everyone where they are.

Jessie has been teaching yoga since 1997, and is passionate about yoga as a nourishing tool for life, in particular restorative yoga to replenish the body’s systems, quieten the mind, and cultivate emotional stability. She is the author of four yoga books (HarperCollins) including the bestseller Yoga Postures for Your Body, Mind & Soul, and co-creator of the Radiance Yoga DVD Series. Meet the Radiance team >

Getting There, Arrival & Departure, Extra Nights

Arrival Day – Italy Yoga Retreat
Meet your hosts at 12:00 pm at Porta Romana Train Station, Viterbo. Viterbo is around 2 hours by train from central Rome or Fiumicino Airport (FCO). A private shuttle can be arranged on request, otherwise the train is easy and convenient. After checking into our hotel, we’ll enjoy lunch in one of Viterbo’s lively piazzas, stroll the medieval monuments and laneways, then regroup for our first Restorative Yoga class before sharing a relaxed Italian welcome dinner.

Departure Day 
On our final morning we enjoy yoga and breakfast, with time to shower and pack before hotel check-out at 11:00 am. We’re happy to help arrange extra nights in Viterbo or transport to Rome.

Getting to Viterbo: 
Plan to fly into Rome. Train travel in Italy is reliable and easy to book online at
www.trenitalia.com (recommended).
From Roma Ostiense or Roma Trastevere: direct trains to Viterbo run frequently from 6:00 am.
From Roma Termini: services usually require a change.
From Fiumicino Airport (FCO): allow ~30 minutes to walk to the station; most routes change at Trastevere. 
Journey time is approximately 2 hours.
Private driver transfers are available on request (€200–€240 up to 8 passengers). 
Viterbo has two stations – Porta Romana and Porta Fiorentina – both close to the historic centre. When searching, select Viterbo – “Tutte le Stazioni” to see all options. 
(Taxi fares from Fiumicino Airport to central Rome/Termini are fixed at €55.)

For this retreat we meet in Viterbo, an easy 2 hour train ride from Rome. All getting there details are emailed upon registration and some guests might like to meet in Rome for the train trip to Viterbo together. 

For your Italy yoga and walking retreat, bring comfortable yoga clothes, quality walking gear, supportive walking / hiking shoes, sunscreen, a hat, and a refillable water bottle. We’ll provide a full packing list upon registering.
